Economics has been taught at Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) since 2004. The faculty members of the department are reputed and known at home and abroad for their teaching and research achievements. The Department of Economics offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The BSS (Hons) in Economics program started in Fall 2004 with the objective of producing economic leaders of 21st century in Bangladesh. The MSS in Economics program started in Summer 2008 with the aim to teach economic theories at a high analytical level. Additionally, the programs aim to familiarize students with the application of theory and research methods to economic practice and policy. Such a combination of rigorous academic thinking with practical application is essential for any professional active in the field of economics, either in policy or research. Students will learn about the influence of economic factors on society and how economic theory can be applied to interpret and analyze economic problems. The curriculum has been designed so that the students, along with sufficient training in Economics, also get exposure to Finance, Marketing, Banking, and other related fields in order to handle the multi-disciplinary challenges of the real world.
Graduates of Economics can find jobs in diverse areas such as teaching, banking, financial institutions, development organizations, and corporations, etc. Rapid privatization of economic activities in Bangladesh has also created ample opportunities for Economics graduates to find their placement in corporate sectors at an increasing rate. Currently graduates of the department are working in school and colleges, financial and banking sectors, including institutions such as Bangladesh Bank, and other public and private commercial Banks. They are also employed in Grameen Bank, Grameen Phone, Aktel, Bangla Link, BRAC, Proshika, Care, Action Aid, etc.
The medium of instruction at AUB is English. AUB places great emphasis on achieving a high level of competence in both written and oral English, the program includes a series of courses on use of the English language. AUB also encourages students to become familiar with the use of computers for written and mathematical work.
